How much sleep my baby needs

20-10-2017

Sleep is Important but if we are more aware of Baby Sleep needs in initial years, we can respond much better to baby’s needs and it can help developing health sleep habits for baby and help achieving them the different milestones during first few years when their brain and body is working continuously to achieve different physical and emotional skills.

Often parents are not aware of Sleep Cycles, naptimes and sleep time needs as per the age of baby and they miss looking at awake times and often neglects the importance of bedtime. But babies/infants loves the routine and toddlers love the structure, they easily adapt to the routine and can predict on daily basis what’s coming next. So, if you do the same bedtime routine and they know its SLEEP time and they understand the need of SLEEP.

Each Sleep Cycle is of 45 mins and if your baby is getting up before 40-45 mins its catnapping and baby needs to some skills to consolidate two sleep cycle to have one Solid Nap. This skill is not achieved in a night but being consistent with, eventually baby adapts to it and can soother themselves.

Age Awake Times Number Of naps Total day Time Sleep Night Time Sleep Total Sleep
Birth-6 weeks 45mins-60 mins 4-5 naps 6-8 hours 9-12 hours 18-20 hours
6-8weeks 60mins-75mins 3-4 naps 6-8 hours 9-12hours 16-18 hours
2-3 months 1-1.20 hours 3-4 naps 4-6 hours 9-12 hours 15-18 hours

Note: for Newborn we suggest the Total Sleeping time as they nap for a short time and again get up hungry for the feed/bottle. But remember foundation is the pillar. If you Start bedtime routine anywhere after 4 weeks, it can help baby consolidating sleep cycles as their sleep starts getting consolidated after 6 weeks.

Some parents force the nap transition from 2-1 at 13/14 months and move the bedtime an hour earlier.

Every baby is different and some might need little less sleep and some might need little more. But, keeping an eye on awake timings and baby’s response to it, you can easily make out if baby is overtired or under tired and you can either increase the awake time by 10-15 mins if baby is under tired or decrease the awake time window if baby is overtired. Often parents feel that if baby is sleeping less in day, it will be better to get them some more night sleep, but this is NOT TRUE. You cannot expect overtired baby to have good night sleep and baby will get up more number of times at night. And if you are putting under tired baby to bed, he may take little longer to go to sleep or can have little more of crying than expected. Baby’s needs are sensitive and the only way they respond is crying, so please don’t judge your own parental skills here. You are just helping your baby to SLEEP BETTER, little FUSS is expected and you are always there for you baby to make him feel secured.
